Emergency action to improve the access of vulnerable rural households

PHG, Palestinian Hydrology Group, is a Palestinian non- governmental organization, working in the oPts since 1987 striving to promote the role of women and civil societies in managing local water and its related environmental resources to ensure transparency, good water governance and just and equal provision of water and sanitation services to the rural and marginal communities in the West Bank and Gaza.

ACPP, Asamblea de Cooperación por la Paz, is a Spanish non-governmental organization working in the oPts since 1993 to improve health services, agricultural activities, and water access and sanitation services for vulnerable Palestinian population in the West Bank and Gaza.

Food security ECHO project

The project, funded by the UE’s Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO), and implemented by PHG and ACPP supports 423 rural families in the Ramallah and Hebron Districts.

Brief description

The aim of this project is to secure access and availability to a diversified diet, improving efficiently use of water resources and agricultural land.

To this end the project will implement 90 rainfall water cisterns and 373 home gardens in the following villages: Bil’in, Budrus, Shuqba, Al Midya, Al Lubban al Gharbi, and Rantis in the Ramallah District and in Adh Dhahiriya in the Hebron District.

Capacity building activities to improve food processing, home gardening and composting skills will be carried out among 200 families.

Project Duration

The activities have started the 15th of June 2007 with a duration of 10 months. The most vulnerable families will be benefited from this project.

ECHO, the Humanitarian Aid department of the European Commission, funds relief operations for victims of natural disasters and conflicts outside the European Union. Aid is channeled impartially, straight to victims, regardless of their race, ethnic group, religion, gender, age, nationality or political affiliation.

Water Supply ECHO project

The project, funded by the UE’s Humanitarian Aid Department (ECHO), and implemented by PHG and ACPP supports 37,100 inhabitants from the rural communities of the Ramallah and Bethlehem Districts.

Brief description

The aim of this project is to ensure access and availability of quality water for domestic use for rural communities. To this end, 5 local spring will be rehabilitated, protected and this water will be connected to the internal water networks of the following villages: Beit ’Anan, ‘Abwein and Qatanna in the Ramallah District and Al-Khadr and Nahhalin in the Bethlehem District.

Equipments as storage water tanks and pumping stations will be installed where needed. 125 of the most vulnerable households that have not connection to the water network will be connected. Also irrigation pipes from the springs to the local agricultural land will be implemented.

Training courses to improve the village council and families skills regarding water management will be carried out. 35 representatives of the village councils will be trained in operation and maintenance of the water systems and billing and cost recovery strategies. Representatives of 125 families will be trained in optimization of water use and 225 in the use of water for agriculture.
