Battir / Bethlehem Governorate is suffering from a chronic shortage in water supply during this summer.
The major source of water to the community is the Israeli Mekorot Company that supplies other Palestinian communities in the area. Since the supplied quantity is limited, this caused the supply of water to Battir to be very small and the water pressure in the pipes is very weak; it seems that this problem is getting worse every year. The shortage in water quantities is forcing many families to use local springs that are in many cases contaminated and not good for domestic use. As a result of this, many families had to leave their houses to an area where they can get water. This is all in addition to the direct effect of construction of the Separation Wall that started to affect directly the community and its residents.
The head of Battir local council is suggesting the following interventions to help in solving the problem:
1. Construction of a 5000 cubic meter reservoir for the community, knowing that the land is available in a very good location.
2. Changing the main line which is 3 inches and about 1,300 meters long, with another one with 4 inches diameter.
3. Some of other secondary lines are more than 35 years old and in bad need of replacement with new lines.
