Water Supply Shortage in Ramallah and Al Bireh Cities

Israeli Mekorot Company and reduction in the water pressure that will directly affect the water supply to the related communities.

It seems that this problem is getting even worse during this summer. During the last 7 days, the problem reached its optimum level when people in Ramallah, Al Bireh and Betunia cities, which are considered major cities in the Governorate, started to purchase tankerd water from different sources with an average cost that ranged between 15 to 20 NIS per cubic meter.

Follow up for the reason of this water shortage in the Governorate, knowing that the Jerusalem Water Undertaking (JWU) supplies this Governorate and knowing that several other communities are also suffering from the same problem, it was clear that the major cause of the problem is the Israeli Mekorot Water Company. The Company is carrying out some maintenance work and connection changes on water pipes that are supplying the Palestinian communities with water; maintenance work started last week and it is not yet know when it will be finished or what type of connection changes are being implemented.

The JWU took response to minimize impact of the problem on Ramallah and Al Bireh cities by delivering the amount of water allocated for other communities in the Governorate to the two major cities, but the problem in Ramallah and Al Bireh is still very clear and households on higher areas are forced to purchase water through tankers and from different sources. Therefore, most of the communities in Ramallah Governorate are currently without piped water and are forced to buy water through tankers, especially those communities located on higher areas.
